Since at a young age in the Academy, Lee has been constantly teased by his fellow students for not being able to perform any form of ninjutsu or genjutsu due to his inability to mold or control his life force (charka).
However upon being assigned to sensei Gai’s mentorship, Gai was able to help Lee overcome this great weakness by working on his Taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat). Lee hoping to become a great ninja one day began to idolize Gai and adopted his sensei’s work ethic and acquired among other questionable characteristics, such as the same green jumpsuit, shiny bowl haircut and sparkling smile.
When his teammate Hyuuga Neji, a genius of a specialized hand-to-hand combat style constantly mocked about Lee’s ability to master taijutsu and to accept his fate, Lee works even harder, determine to prove himself that if a person is determined enough, they can overcome any trial.
Impressed with Lee’s determination and iron will to succeed, his sensei Gai took a personal interest in Lee’s attempts to prove himself and began to help him in his dream of excelling in taijutsu.

With Gai’s assistance Lee learned many advanced taijutsu abilities, including the powerful Lotus of Kohnoha technique. He became the first and only chunin capable to open the first five of eight chakra gates, thus bringing him ever closer to achieving his goal of becoming a great ninja.
Rock Lee has also manifested a natural predisposition towards a unique battle style called the Drunken Fist. He basically becomes an unpredictable and unstoppable force of destruction and chaos whenever he takes a small sip of sake. He stopped drinking ever since he ruined a restaurant at one point after the smallest sip.
